How does Google Voice work?

Google Voice is a VoIP phone system that has options for individuals and businesses. Google Voice for Business is a part of the Google Workspace app suite, and can be used to make and receive phone calls, access voicemail, and send text messages.

As I said, Google Voice is a VoIP phone system. VoIP, short for Voice over Internet Protocol, which is simply an internet based phone service. An internet phone system is typically able to connect to a variety of devices such as mobile phones and tablets. With some providers you will be able to access your VoIP phone system from a computer and browser plugin as well. The exact capabilities will differ depending on the specific provider that you are using, but it is recommended to look for a provider that is able to offer you access to your phone system across a variety of devices.

How does VoIP work?

The technology behind VoIP may seem complex at first, but it can be broken down into a couple easy to understand steps. While it may be interesting to read about this technology, as a VoIP user it isn’t necessary to know everything that happens behind the scenes. The phone call experience for all parties involved will be the same as a traditional phone call.

  1. An internet phone user initiates a new call, or picks up an incoming call
  2. The VoIP system picks up the user’s voice as analog voice signals
  3. The analog voice signals are compressed into data packets which are then transmitted over the internet
  4. The data packets are decompressed back into analog voice signals for the person on the other side of the phone call to hear

As I said, it may seem complex but for the parties involved in the phone call it is the same intuitive process as a typical telephone call.

How does Google Voice compare to other VoIP systems?
